| description | This paper examines a process of EU Banking union creation in the context of deepening financial integration of the Member States and building a genuine Economic and Monetary Union. Banking union was created to prevent future devastating effects of the financial and economic crisis, formation of a robust foundation framework for the EU single internal market, ensuring the stability of the single European currency. Banking union is the result of a political compromise reached between the key EU institutions and Member States during intense negotiations and on the basis of the roadmap developed by European Commission. The key elements of the Banking union are Single Supervisory Mechanism, Single Resolution Mechanism, and Deposit Guarantee Schemes. Banking Union provides a significant enhancement of the role and responsibility of the European Central Bank and the strengthening of the European Commission coordinating functions. Despite some flaws Banking union is crucial to the survival of the euro area and the entire European economy. |
