Summary:Examining 20th century “art brut” by James Edward Deeds, Martín Ramírez, Ovartaci, and Clément Fraisse produced within psychiatric facilities in America and Europe, this paper argues that these artists enacted transgressive creativity, not only aesthetically but through the materiality of their approaches, thereby resisting what sociologist Erving Goffman terms “total institutionalization.”
