description One of the key texts that allows us to understand sixteenth-century prose and its innovations is Lope de Vega’s Arcadia (1598). Nowadays, critics recognize the popularity that the Arcadia enjoyed among readers from the following century, but not the daring aesthetic that runs through the text. This article examines Lope’s aesthetic proposal by focusing on one of the intercalated stories in the Arcadia, the «Fable of Alasto and Crisalda», and underlining in this fable two related stylistic traits: Lope’s use of interruptions and his invitations to moral reflection.
