Description
Summary:Words of Roma origin form the largest foreign group, after Turkish words, in the lexical system of Bulgarian slang. They entered the sociolectal vocabulary probably as early as the 15th or 16th-century and are still in wide everyday use. This article analyses lexico-semantic and grammatical issues related to Roma words in Bulgarian social dialects, mainly in corporative slang. It considers some significant changes which occurred in their form and meaning: first, certain phonetic and/or morphological adaptations and, subsequently, one or several semantic transformations. In this process, after a period of extensive use, a word or an expression of Roma origin can lose its specific exotic character and disappear from the slang discourse or, on the contrary, can cross sociolectal borders and become an essential part of colloquial or informal speech and thus cease being perceived as slang. Moreover, during this linguistic integration, some Roma words can become an extremely productive basis for the creation of new slang lexical units.
