Description
Summary:Nature-based solutions (NbS) emerged in international biodiversity policy in the 2010s under the leadership of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The promoters of this notion are building and disseminating a policy statement linking nature conservation to climate action, according to which biodiversity is a source of solutions to climate change. This article studies the modalities of dissemination of this statement and the structuring of a cross-sectoral coalition of actors. The 2021 IUCN World Conservation Congress is used to observe the effort of diffusion of the NbS concept by its proponents, and its mobilization by a coalition of actors. We highlight the way in which certain actors in this coalition interpret this concept and integrate it into their agendas, the strategies deployed to cement this coalition. Finally, we propose avenues of discussion on the role of NbS in the framework of a strategy for the climatisation of biodiversity stakeholders and question the tension that exists within IUCN in the dissemination of SfNs.
