Jejunal atresia causing failure to thrive: The role of camera mobile phones in aiding diagnosis in limited resource settings

Type 1 jejunal atresias with partial webs present with intermittent features of high grade, partial intestinal obstruction potentially delaying diagnosis, particularly in low resource countries with limited access to advanced imaging technology. We report a case of a 2-year-old female with incomplet...

description Type 1 jejunal atresias with partial webs present with intermittent features of high grade, partial intestinal obstruction potentially delaying diagnosis, particularly in low resource countries with limited access to advanced imaging technology. We report a case of a 2-year-old female with incomplete jejunal obstruction due to type 1 jejunal atresia with partial web. She presented with visible abdominal peristaltic waves that started at 3 months but was not diagnosed until 21 months later by a video her mother captured with mobile phone during one of the visible abdominal peristalsis episodes. We discuss the role of mobile phones in facilitating timely surgical diagnosis in the low and middle income countries (LMICs). Keywords: Type 1 jejunal atresia, Jejunal web, Mobile phones in surgery, Limited resource settings
