description | In this paper the effect of the functionality of synthesized thermosetting acrylic resins (with hydroxy and carboxy groups) and the cure temperature on the process of crosslinking and properties of the coatings was investigated. Methylated melamine resin, characterized by 1H and C NMR was used as the crosslinking agent. The degree of crosslinking was studied by infrared spectroscopy by determining the conversion of functional groups and the sol fraction. On the basis of the results obtained it was found that compositions with lower functionality of the acrylic resin had a higher conversion of functional groups, during which cocondensation reactions occurred (acrylic melamine crosslinks) in a wide temperature crosslinking range. Consequently better control of the coating properties was achieved. The degree of crosslinking was in good correlation to the sol fraction content and the resin hardness. |
