description | Natural philosophy has been a discipline of great academic tradition at the mediaeval and modern universities, bound above all to aristotelian scholastics, even though it declines from the end of the 18th on. During the 19th century and most part of the 20th century this science became a mere usual part of the curriculum of the Catholic faculties and seminaries. Between 1930-1960 efforts were done by the side of Thomists to the revival of this discipline. Natural science was then considered togheter with epistemology and philosophy of science. But these purposes practically did not go beyond the thomistic scholl itself. In the last 20 years, efforts can be seen to a new foundation of the natural philosophy, specially though some Thomists who pursue Jacques Maritain's announced program. In this essay two moments are analysed, both in relation to Thomas Aquinas' thought, showing that he was interested above all in a new reading of the grades of abstraction, seeking in special for the limits and justification of the irreducibility of metaphysics. In his turn, Maritain directs himself towards a more closed vision of aristotelism, puting emphasis on Aquinas' commentaries on Aristoteles |
