description Due to the aging of the population and the increase in the retirement age, the strategic task of the Russian State is to preserve the older generation as an active part of modern society. The person is focused on such a significant resource of the general and professional development as the willingness to adequately respond to numerous unpredictable and often spontaneous changes in the socio-cultural sphere in a fairly short period of time. The reference to retro and perspective of gerontological education allows us to characterize essential features of its phenomenology, and on analysis of the historical dynamics of their establishment and development. The experiment was focused on the evaluation of the results obtained during the long-term work of the Institute of the Third Age of Smolensk State University. The research data shows that the organization of the pedagogical process with retro-students should be built taking into account the orientation to the main invariant components of gerontological education: axiological, ontological and epistemological. Thus, our retrospective and prospective analysis of gerontology education shows that contemporary Russian gerontological education as the final link of continuing education is today a flexible, dynamic educational component of the entire gerontological infrastructure, harmoniously integrating into the reform of the entire educational system in Russia. However, such optimization of education must be based on educational and sociocultural traditions of the pedagogical process.
