Summary: | THE INTERPRETIVE THEORY OF DANICA SELESKOVITCH TWENTY YEARS AFTER: THE QUESTION OF THE DIRECTIONALITY IN CONFERENCE INTERPRETING
The aim of the present paper is to examine directionality in conference interpreting and the changing concepts of active and passive languages in the practice of interpreting in Poland. The study presents the results of a small-scale survey conducted in Warsaw in Winter 2019/2020 among interpreters, members of national professional associations of interpreters in order to investigate the changing landscape of the profession, the changing roles of interpreters working out of their A language into their B or C languages or between their B and C languages in different settings. Apart of the data gathered in the survey, in-depth interviews were carried out with three interpreters so as to indentify possible time-contigent changes in their perception of directionality in interpreting. The study draws some conclusions concerning the utility of language regime and the training of new generations of conference interpreters.
