description Introduction and Objective Physical activity is an essential and integrating component of a health-promoting lifestyle. The aim of the study was assessment of the level of physical activity of students according to the type of university, gender and place of residence. Material and methods The study included 629 students from three universities in Wrocław, Poland: Wrocław University, University of Science and Technology, and the Medical University. A short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was applied. Statistical analysis was performed using the software STATISTICA v. 9.0, and Pearson’s chi-square test for idependence was applied. Results A high level of physical activity was attained by 37.3% of students, while 26.0% obtained a sufficient level, and 36.7% – a low level. A high level was significantly most often declared by students from the University of Science and Technology, followed by those from Wrocław University (50.7% vs. 27.7%; p < 0.001), and the Medical University (50.7% vs. 33.0%; p <0.001). A low level of activity was significantly less frequently reported by students from the University of Science and Technology, compared to those from Wrocław University (19.3% vs. 51.4%; p < 0.001), and the Medical University (19.3% vs. 40.3%; p<0.001). A high level of physical activity was achieved by 38.1% of females and 36.6% of males, while a low level was observed in 34.3% of females and 39.1% of males. A high level of physical activity was achieved by 38.7% of students living in rura areas, and 36.9% of studentów from urban areas. Conclusions 1) Gender did not exert an effect on the level of physical activity of students. 2) A high level of physical activity was more frequent among students from the University of Science and Technology, compared to those from Wrocław University and the Medical University. A low level of physical activity was most often observed among students from Wrocław University. 3) The students’ place of origin had influence on their physical activity.
