description The essence of the XVth century Renaissance humanism was the apology of the creative person. This idea was completely original then, for during the Antiquity and the Middle Ages, man was thought of as being subject to the immutable laws of Nature. Because of this it is possible to identify Renaissance and humanism, specially in works such as Pico de la Mirandolla’s Oration on the Dignity of Man, which puts personal dignity on the same level than freedom. To Pico the simultaneous restoration of the culture of Antiquity and the praise of the creative person culminates and constitutes the origin of a new myth, that of the learned man whose words reveal his inner being.
