An Optimality Account of the Variability of the Third Tone Sandhi Domain in Mandarin
In this paper I use the framework of Optimality Theory to explain the possible tonal patterns of continuous third tones in Mandarin. The constraints indicate that the third tone patterns are sensitive to the syntactic structures, such as complement and adjunct.
