description This paper reflects upon two methodological issues raised by my PhD project. Taking the migration of French musicians in Northern Germany (1660-1730) as a starting point, we will consider the connections between cultural history and migration studies. The first part focusses on the use of scales, a crucial point for a study on the Holy Roman Empire where the political mapping is often very complex. Through a few case studies, we try to locate different geographical scales relevant to the study of musical circulations in Early Modern Northern Europe. The paper is also exploring new opportunities created by the combination of music history and prosopography: the study of musical exchanges between France and Germany can be fruitfully associated with a prosopographical investigation into the social group formed by French musicians.
