| description | Tuscia is the name given to most of Etruria, including large areas of Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria. This territory, nowadays usually identified with the province of Viterbo, extends north of Rome, located between imaginary geological boundary lines traced by the River Tiber and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The area is of considerable importance for the comprehension of the settlement processes that characterise the upper Lazio Region; one need only think of the articulated phase of the Etruscan systems set on ridge paths, or the territorial layout which derived from the Roman intervention, characterised by roads polarized towards Rome, which still today affects modern routes. On this complex road network, small and medium-sized urban settlements had increased over the centuries.
Despite the many peculiarities, these places often prove unable to adapt to changing times and the phenomenon of depopulation also causes a gradual architectural distortion of the constructive tradition in favour of urban expansions deprived of those features that constitute the typicality of places.
After a historic and geographical overview, this contribution aims at initiating a reflection on the issue of the abandonment of some Tuscia villages, analysing the results of depopulation processes and identifying the possible ways of contrasting the phenomenon starting from material and immaterial identity values.
Borghi abbandonati della Tuscia: una proposta di metodo per riconoscere i caratteri identitari da conservare e restituire
Tuscia è la denominazione attribuita a gran parte dell’Etruria, comprendente vaste aree di Toscana, Lazio e Umbria. Tale territorio, oggi maggiormente identificato con la provincia di Viterbo, si estende a nord di Roma, collocato tra immaginarie linee geologiche di confine date dal fiume Tevere e il mar Tirreno.
L’area riveste un’importanza rilevante per la comprensione dei processi insediativi che caratterizzano l’alto Lazio; basti pensare all’articolata fase dei sistemi etruschi impostati su percorsi di crinale, o al nuovo organismo territoriale dato dall’intervento romano il quale, con strade polarizzate verso Roma, ancora oggi condiziona le percorrenze moderne. Su tale complessa rete viaria, spesso adattamento polare di quella etrusca, si sono accresciuti nei secoli piccoli e medi insediamenti urbani.
Purtroppo, nonostante le molte peculiarità, questi luoghi si dimostrano spesso incapaci di adeguarsi al mutare dei tempi e il fenomeno di spopolamento degli antichi centri ha portato ad espansioni urbane prive di quei caratteri che costituiscono la tipicità dei luoghi.
Dopo un inquadramento di carattere storico e geografico, il contributo intende avviare una riflessione sul tema dell’abbandono di alcuni borghi della Tuscia analizzando gli esiti dei processi di spopolamento e individuando le possibili modalità di contrasto al fenomeno partendo dai valori identitari materiali e immateriali. |
