| Summary: | The Ilinden insurrection (1903) and its most impressive and visionary accomplishment, the ephemeral Republic of Kruševo, has encountered a huge echo in the Macedonian theater. Thus, the plays Ilinden (1923) by Nikola Kirov Majski and The Phantom of Liberty (around 1909) by Vojdan Černodrinski, created after the insurrection on the occasion of that anniversary, bring a precious critical point of view towards that crucial event of Macedonian national history. This contribution analyses the representations of history and of Ilinden in those works, as the ideological discourses that they support and reinforce, or deconstruct, revealing the mirror relations between the representations/narrations and History. Ilinden and The Phantom of Liberty trouble the frontiers between History and history, between Nation and narration, opening also the space for other and different narrations of (des)identification. |
