Summary: | London plays a predominant part in Pilgrimage by Dorothy Richardson, in particular in the four volumes under study in this article: The Tunnel (1919), Interim (1919), Deadlock (1921) and Revolving Lights (1923). We can study not only a concrete portrait of the town as it was at the time but also the way Miriam, the main protagonist, experiences the town and the metaphorical rendering of the social and symbolic roles this illimitable city plays in her life. London, however, is not present only in the descriptions and metaphors that can be found in the text or through onomastics. It can be felt vicariously, as it may have influenced the form and style of a modernist writing, one of the aims of which was to capture the flux and rhythm of this urban space. |
