Summary: | In this article, I will concentrate on the comparison between for and because. Linguists have divided opinions concerning the way the two connectives work. Some people think that for has almost the same meaning as because while others believe they have different properties but still function in the same way in some utterances. In what follows, I will first try to understand why for and because can be compared on semantic and syntactic grounds. I will then suggest an enunciative characterisation of the two connectors and finally I will illustrate their fondamental properties with some utterances emphasizing the fact that for and because need to be differentiated. |
