description The Poema de Mío Cid, the centrepiece of Spanish chivalric literature, narrates the exploits of Rodrigo Díaz against the Muslims. And yet these battles do not belong to the canon of holy war; nor is the Cid either an ardent defender of Christianity or a man chosen by God. The object of this study is to examine the nature of the relationships that the various characters establish with God by analysing the lexical field relating to God — whose name is in fact largely de-semanticised. These relations are characterised by the need for protection and by signs of trust, but also by wishful thinking on the part of the Cid, who constantly associates God’s will with his own exploits, and above all with the riches that his victories bring him.
