Summary:In a social environment deeply deteriorated by two mega-events in preparation – the 2014 World Football Cup and the 2016 Olympics – the government of the state of Rio de Janeiro has set up, in several favelas of the city of Rio de Janeiro, a new neighborhood police force, the PPUs. An investigation conducted in several poor neighborhoods enables the authors of this article to examine the problems involved in such an experiment, criticized by residents, in an environment marked by drug trafficking and violence.
