Summary: | In current discourses on regionalisation, the city and its hinterland are no longer viewed in terms of an opposition between the centre and the periphery, but are rather interpreted as one single spatial unit. Recent conceptions of the city and also other spatial constructs — such as the regional city, theZwischenstadt, the network city and theRandstad — define urban space on a broader scale invoking the notion of the city-region. This analysis of discourses traces the shifts in patterns of perception, of ordering and of interpretation in spatial research and spatial planning with regard to suburban settlement development in both western and eastern Germany since 1990. It identifies a number of different normative positions („urban sprawl” vs. „newgestalt”), as well as pointing to the different courses of development which have taken place in western and eastern Germany. The article closes with a critical reflection on the tendency in evidence in discourses on regionalisation to equate the city and the city-region.
