description | Background and Objectives: One of the functions of the liver is detoxification of drugs in the body. In this study, the effect of hydroalcohlic extract of Melissa officinalison liver tissue was investigated in kindled rats.
Methods: In this research, 48 female rats were randomly divided into 8 groups of 6 each. Two groups of the rats were considered as healthy control, of which one group received normal diet and the second group received lamotrigine(10mg/kg/day) orally. The treatment group was divided into 5 groups after induction of epilepsy by pentylenetetrazol(PTZ) (at a dose of 40mg/kg/day) through intraperitoneal injection. One group of the epileptic rats was treated with normal diet (control-sham) and the second epileptic group was treated with lamotrigine (10mg/kg/day). The third and fourth epileptic groups were treated with Melissa extract (at doses of 100 and 200mg/kg). The fifth and sixth epileptic groups received lamotrigine and Melissaextract (100 and 200mg/kg) simultaneously. After 4 weeks of treatment, all the rats were anesthetized and after blood-taking, their livers were removed for biochemical analysis. Then, after tissue sectioning and hematoxylin and eosin staining, the slides were studied by light microscope. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test. The Significance Level Was Considered p<0.05.
Results: In the group treated with the extract, a significant decrease was observed in the levels of liver enzymes, triglyceride, and cholesterol (p<0.05). Also, histological lesions of the liver were improved, as compared to the epileptic rats treated with lamotrigine.
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that Melissa extract protects the liver against adverse effects of lamotrigine. |
