description Thomas Weelkes (ca 1575 to 1623) is an English composer of late Renaissance period of transition to early Baroque. In addition to numerous works of sacred music is known as a representative of the English madrigal, sung in polyphony exclusively on English texts. One of his songs, As Vesta was from Latmos hill descending, composed in 1601 on order as part of the Triumphs of Oriana collection, known for its music rhetorical figures, technique of "word painting" that uses music options esp. in terms of content words such as up and down, numbers, and numbers or length of time. This song may well be used in the study of musical rhetorical figures as a didactic tool.
