Summary: | While considerable work has been done to expand the treatment of spiritual friendship found in sources such as Augustine, Aelred of Revaulx, and Aquinas, scant attention has been given to the important role of moral correction among friends. Yet moral correction is misunderstood and frequently construed as tantamount to moral condemnation. After considering some standard objections to moral correction, I advance the notion of spiritual rescue, which I suggest is essential to a theology of friendship. |
