description This essay aims to explain how between food substances (without which we would not live) and psychotropic substances (taken or to escape from life or to experience what is beyond life) there is first of all an almost overlapping, when we reflect phenomenologically on the question of the "withdrawal crisis”. In this perspective the problem of "addiction" seems to assume another connotation, much less conventional. Then the essay tried to clarify the differences between food substances (bread) and intoxicants (wine) and the deep anthropological reasons linked to the use of psychotropic plants. Finally, it seeks to describe the passage from a ritual and religious use of psychotropic substances to an experimental-artistic (certainly elitist) use of these same between the romantic nineteenth century and the “psychedelic” twentieth century.
