Description
Summary:Abstract The human figure is the central subject of William Blake’s prints and drawings, but he rarely depicts the arrangement of the musculature of the body with anatomical accuracy. Here, I will explore the origin and significanceof Blake’s divergence from anatomical correctness. I hope to demonstrate that the incorrect anatomy of William Blake’s figures is a subversionof the mechanistic view of the body that is consistent with his rejection of the mechanistic understanding of the world of Newtonian physics and Deistic theology. Further, I will suggest how Blake’s anti-mechanistic beliefs bear on his views on universal forgiveness.
