| description | The Province of Matera realizes the Regione Basilicata politics of natural and forest patrimony guardianship and promotes the net of protected natural areas. The Province of Matera is characterized by a wide range of ecosystemic variations, which correspond to stages of degradation and reconstruction of the vegetational dynamics. At present, the Province of Matera forest patrimony does not seem in conformity with the demand of supply for wood industries. On a functional basis, the forests assume a remarkable importance under the protective and aesthetic - recreational profile, and as a fundamental element of the environmental balance in an area affected by diffused and, in many cases, serious hydrogeologic disarrangements. The present study is aimed at providing some descriptive elements about the main vegetational traits of the Provincial territory, at underlining particular degradated situations, and at illustrating some actions for forest recovery and improvement. Generally, the forest needs urgent actions to reconstruct the forest coverage and to preserve and improve the vegetation, in equilibrium with the environmental characteristics. |
