description Any researcher doing research with human subjects must submit his or her project to an ethics research board for evaluation. Some researchers, especially those in the social and human sciences, do not see the need for such an intrusion from outsiders. This premise helps understand the author’s position : research ethics are in keeping with a historical context that calls for social control over researchers, and that also constitutes a criticism of contemporary scientific research. The author explains what research ethics are, the problems they seek to resolve, and how they work. In the first section, the author examines why research ethics, which first developed in the 1960s, gradually took on their current form. The second section presents the moral choices that explain this process, while the third and final section explores the strengths and the weaknesses of what we now call research ethics.
