description For some ten years now, the history of slave trades, slaveries and their abolitions has occupied a more significant place in education in France, even though the place it occupies has at times been ambiguous, and controversies or polemics surrounding it are far from exhausted. The interplay between the analysis of the history curriculum, textbooks, and the results of a survey conducted by the NPRI show that the topic is dealt with in a contrasting ways in school history lessons. It tends to be more present – although not necessarily up-to-date – in high schools and in vocational high schools, but is confined to the study of abolition in senior high school.  On a more general level, the treatment of this issue highlights the difficulty of integrating colonial and imperial dimension into national and European history, as well as the questions raised by the addressing of sensitive issues during everyday teaching practice.
