description In the 17th and 18th century, the further expansion of the large transoceanic trades induces a serious evolution in the French ports hierarchy and a clustering phenomenon in favour of a few major trading organisations. In the last century of the “Ancien Regime”, Nantes, in the same way as Bordeaux, Marseille or Le Havre-Rouen, most certainly belongs to this category of major trading ports of the kingdom. Whilst affirming their international trading status, they exercise a constant supervision over the smaller ports situated in their immediate environment leading to the construction of true “shipping and seaport areas”.This paper aims to introduce the concept of seaport area, proposed by Gérard Le Bouëdec, and developed as part of my doctoral thesis from Nantes cases; a comparative approach will then be conducted with other major French ports, in order to validate the relevance of the concept; the approach must finally lead to a typology of "seaport areas".
