description | The Ostrogothic king Theoderic is generally perceived as having been estranged from and hostile to the Catholic church as a result of his belief in the Arian confession. Theoderic’s strained relations with Pope John I and emperor Justin I towards the end of his reign contribute to this vision. However, in this article evidence is presented that points to a willingness on his part to contribute to projects involving churches in Rome that were under the care of the Catholic bishop. During the sixteenth-century destruction of the old St. Peter’s basilica roof-tiles bearing brick-stamps with the titles and name of Theoderic came to light. Numerous examples have also been recovered from the roof of S. Maria Maggiore. Recent discussions dedicated to the building policy of Theoderic show no awareness of these brick-stamps, even though they, together with the brick-stamps upon roof-tiles from numerous other churches and secular buildings, point to the Ostrogothic ruler’s interest in the architectural adornment of the city of Rome. |
