description | This media archaeological research seeks to excavate three devices imagined by the French press in 1877: the “auditory microscope”, the “telectroscope”, and the “mechanical reader”, which can be viewed as the materials of a “proto-digital” vision that emerged and coloured how people in that same era imagined the concept of media. By highlighting the major role that an imagined technological future and social constructions played in appropriation processes, this article looks specifically at the sociology of uses, while also calling for a broader reflection on the blurred lines between scientific and imaginary fields. These fictions, which already appear in scientific and news publications, particularly in the mainstream media, draw on and depict the latest scientific developments, which often remain the stuff of storytelling and imagination before they can actually be realized. |
