description S1 endogamic families (FS1), obtained from Eldorado (Nitrodente) experimental maize variety were evaluated to verify intra-population variability in phosphorus (P) uptake and utilization efficiency in field and nutrient solution. In the field two hundred FS1 were evaluated to grain yield. In nutrient solution, kinetic parameters and root system morphology, plus dry matter yield, P accumulation and P efficiency utilization were determined in two distinct sub-populations. Variability among FS1 and among sub-populations were observed to grain and dry matter yield, P efficiency utilization, kinetics and morphological parameters. Two very distinct sub-populations were characterized, having ND10, with higher yield, presented higher P efficiency, lower Vmax, Km and Cmin and higher root system and ND2, one of the subpopulations with lower yield at field, presented lower P efficiency, higher values to Vmax, Km and Cmin, and a more developed root system. This genetic variability within the population shows their potential to improve efficiency in the use of P.
