description Aim. The purpose of the study is to study the mortality rate in Ukraine by both regional differentiation and the type of settlement. Materials and Methods. The research was conducted on the basis of official statistics, the depth of the research - 1991-2017, the volume of research - the regions of Ukraine. The following methods were used: the bibliosemantic, medical-statistical and system approach and analysis. Results and Discussion. The regularities of changes in the mortality rate of the population of Ukraine according to the regional differentiation and the type of settlement were found. A significantly higher mortality rate was observed in the North-East region of Ukraine, where the overall mortality rate was 17.19% higher than the similar average Ukrainian indicator. By contrast, in the Western region of Ukraine, the mortality rate was 12.04% lower. The mortality rate of the rural population was 1.4 times higher than in urban settlements and was in the range of 16.1-20.5 ‰. Conclusions. At the current stage, the state of health of the population of Ukraine is unsatisfactory, and the use of absolute and relative indicators, in this case mortality, gives an opportunity to fully assess the state of the problem. The data on the negative dynamics of the mortality rate of the Ukrainian population for 1991-2017 have been confirmed and its trends are determined according to the regional type and type of settlement. The results of the research on regional differentiation point to the need for joint actions of regional authorities of the regions with regard to improving the directions of the state policy on public health.
