Ecocritical Perspectives and Narrative Tensions in Belén Gopegui’s Snow White’s Father. The relationship between literature and ecology has come to the fore in the last few decades and has encompassed several dimensions approached within the evolving framework of ecocriticism. In this context, our purpose is twofold: to explore the possibilities of an ecocritical reading of Belén Gopegui’s novel Snow White’s Father and to highlight the way in which the characters’ uncomfortable questions, the fully-articulated answers and those still latent make up an intricate network of narrative tensions. At the core of the novel lies an all-pervading need of self-questioning and collective reassessment of values, interactions and ethical limits. Its characters are marked by doubt and hesitations regarding the reasons that make them strive for a change or defend the status quo they are fond of. Gopegui is able to perform a delicately-balanced walk on a tightrope between stern anti-capitalist principles and complex human motivations.
REZUMAT. Perspective ecocritice şi tensiuni narative în romanul El padre de Blancanieves de Belén Gopegui. Relaţia dintre literatură şi ecologie este studiată atent de câteva decenii, pe diverse paliere, abordate de paradigma încă fluctuantă a ecocriticii. În acest context, scopul nostru este să explorăm potenţialul unei lecturi ecocritice a romanului El padre de Blancanieves de Belén Gopegui şi să punem în evidenţă modul în care întrebările incomode ale personajelor, răspunsurile complet articulate și cele încă latente alcătuiesc o rețea complexă de tensiuni narative. În centrul romanului se află nevoia stringentă de autointerogare individuală și de reevaluare colectivă a valorilor, interacțiunilor și limitelor etice. Personajele sunt traversate de îndoieli și ezitări cu privire la motivele care le determină să lupte pentru schimbare sau să apere acel status quo de care s-au ataşat. Gopegui reuşeşte astfel să atingă un echilibru fragil pe linia de demarcaţie dintre exprimarea clară a unor poziții ideologice anti-capitaliste și motivații umane complexe.
