| description | Based on a theological approach, we consider the architectural and compositional symbolism of Christian church complexes in rough geomorphological conditions. We have studied differences in the architecture of monastic complexes in mountainous terrains pertaining to the traditions of eastern and western Christian churches. The basis for the formation of Christian churches in mountainous terrains is determined to be symbolic representation of spiritual growth. Architecture is considered as supporting the symbolism of the spiritual content of Christian churches depending on their location on the terrain. We have developed a system of principles for designing churches in complex geomorphological conditions. An experience in designing the restoration and expansion of St. George's Katerlez Monastery in Kerch located on a mountainous terrain is described. |
