description | Among Caribbean countries, Haiti is the least provided by domestic fisheries to meeting nutritional needs. Since Haitian households are among the poorest in the world, the high price for fish hampers per capita consumption increase. The scarcity of fish landings in urban areas, particularly in Port-au-Prince, requires fish supplies from the southern regions, despite being logistically isolated. While the export sectors, specializing in high-value shellfish cope with these transport difficulties, the supply chains dedicated to the domestic market suffer. Moreover, the sector is governed by social logic based on routine habits. That multitude of informal actors isn’t very conducive to economic performance and sanitation. In order to improve such deficiencies, a number of recommendations are stated. At first, supply chains should gradually be organized according to economic efficiency and hygiene. By structuring the different categories of actors into legal entities, a sound basis would be laid to the professionalize fishermen, agencies and dealers. Secondly, quality of products should be increased by improving and maintaining the cold chain from catch to the consumer, as well as by disseminating processing and packaging techniques that would be able to guarantee a satisfying quality. To finish, fish species that are not prized by Haitians but whose nutritional qualities are strong, such as large pelagic fish, should be promoted. |
