description When the Bull Unigenitus arrived in France, the bishops, as first pastors of the Church, ranked among the main agents of the theological controversy over the Constitution. In his decree of 1695, Louis XIV comforted their pre-eminence by strengthening their power of jurisdiction. The charge they were then bestowed upon entailed an important teaching dimension. According to medieval theology, they were pastors, doctors and judges of the faith. The successor of St. Peter, endowed with the same nature, could not claim more than a mere honorary primacy over the episcopal college. The goal of this paper is to question how the teaching authority of bishops evolved during the controversy over Unigenitus that shook the Church of France during the first half of the 18th century.
