Summary: | This is the second of two articles describing how British Gas Corporation monitors the condition of high-pressure gas pipelines without interrupting normal gas flow. The first article, on p 61 of M & C for February 1984, introduced the concept of the ‘intelligent pig’ module, which, as well as carrying data-recording equipment, acts as a propulsion unit for one or more trailer modules also filled with data-handling gear. The train is propelled within the pipe at speeds of around 12 ft/sec by gas pressures approaching 70 bar (1000 lbf/in 2 ). How all the data obtained from an inspection run are analysed is described in this, the second article. Once again we are indebted to the Director of Research, British Gas Corporation, for permission to reprint this article from the Corporation's R & D Digest No 6.
