description | During the reign of Sultan Saʿīd b. Taymūr (1932–1970), government education in Oman was limited to only three government schools (all named al-Saʿīdīyya) situated in the towns of Ṣalalah, Muscat, and Maṭraḥ. Throughout the period, they functioned according to the same principles as when they were established, and education was limited to boys at the primary level. Education was thus marginalized and underwent virtually no development. In the town of Maṭraḥ, which is adjacent to Muscat, the opening of the Saʿīdīyya School was delayed until 1959. Its inhabitants therefore sought alternative means to educate their children, leading them to resort to private education, which became a distinctive feature of the city. This paper sheds light on the various aspects relating to private education in Maṭraḥ, and elucidates the factors behind the establishment of private schools in the town, scrutinizing a number of these schools and their educational methods. Furthermore, it points to the special position of the Sultan towards this form of education that was tied to the distinctive characteristics of Maṭraḥ, in particular its very dynamic mercantile activity and diverse demographic composition. |
