| description | From 1980 up until 2000, Peru experienced an internal armed conflict, with a human toll of 69,280 missing Peruvians. The effect that the violence of those years had on the Peruvian population varied according to social status and gender. In this context, Peruvian women, mainly poor and excluded Andean Quechua speakers, suffered numerous violations of their dignity and rights, which differed from those suffered by men. The escalation of political violence also altered social roles, and so, in spite of the violence that their bodies experienced, many of these women took on a more active role in society, creating spheres where female participation is predominant. |
