description | Emotional tension of family conflicts predetermined the demand for mediation in this area as a more flexible and informal way of resolving disputes, which focuses on the interests of the parties and meeting their psychological needs. At the same time, family mediation has a number of features that distinguish it from mediation in the sphere of civil law or labor relations. This article gives an overview of some features of family mediation in order to acquaint with it the specialists of other helping professions dealing with families, as well as professional mediators from other fields. In particular, the question of the conditions for the applicability of mediation is discussed, and a number of practical recommendations are proposed for conducting preliminary screening preceding the start of the mediation process. The role of co-mediation in resolving family disputes and the conditions under which it will be most effective (gender and professional balance of co-mediators, general work standards and the distribution of roles between them) are explained. An important feature of family mediation is also attention to the protection of the rights and interests of the child: the article discusses practical ways by which the mediator can help participants to bring them into life on the basis of cooperation between parents. The article also discusses the "voice of the child" problem in mediation and safe formats for the participation of minors in the mediation process. The author also considers the problem of the distinctions between mediation in family disputes and psychotherapeutic practice. In conclusion, the author describes the development of international family mediation as a supra-jurisdictional tool for resolving cross-border family disputes and the specifics of this form of mediation.
