description During the 1960’s Lisbon and its neighbour towns suffered a strong urbanization process. The territories between the urban front and the suburban places were quickly and intensively occupied both by housing and a commuting population. In this article two types of dormitory towns descriptions produced in a limited time frame are apprehended and interpreted. The first one is composed by expert descriptions generated within the sphere of the Ministério das Obras Públicas (Public Works Ministry) as a part of a regional planning instrument – Plano Director da Região de Lisboa. The second one comprises images constructed and transmitted by the press. Both descriptions provide qualitative evidence of the social and territorial changes engendered by the transformation of the industrial city into the post-war metropolis.
