description This article focuses on musical writings by composer and theorist Johann Mattheson (1681-1764), author of the most important corpus of texts belonging to musica poetica –writings which conceive music as persuasive art, analogous to verbal speech. The purpose of this text is to place his writings, especially his last and most important treatise –Der Vollkommene Capellmeister ( The perfect master-of-chapel, 1739)– in the context of galanterie. For this, we initially draw the path of the vir bonus ideal from Latin rhetorical texts to its emulation in humanist manuals of courtesy and galanterie. Then, we discuss the transit of Johann Mattheson within the universe of galanterie and his self-representation as a galant type. Finally, we observe specifically galant elements in his musical writings.
