Summary:The following paper analyzes the subject of respect for the guest in Homeric poems, especially in the Odyssey: this theme can be a key to reading the adventures of the protagonist. The centrality of this theme reveals that it is a fundamental value within educational message of the poem. The principle of the respect for the guest is part of an archaic ethic, wich is not based only on warlike areté. This value is a hub of the heroic model and with this also the education of the later epochs will have to face.
