description This paper analyses the verbal aspects involved in the use of the following tenses: Simple Past (PPS) and Compound Past (PPC) in Brazilian Portuguese and Simple Past (P) an Present Perfect (AP) in Mexican Spanish. A detailed linguistic description of the verbal aspects expressed by the use of these tenses in both languages is given, and contrasts are pointed out. This study is meant to analyse the typological distance existing between Brazilian Portuguese and Mexican Spanish as far as two characteristics are concerned: the use of the tenses examined in this paper and the learning of the PPS and PPC by Mexican Spanish speakers.
