description The paper suggests an approach to describing the family of cognate words not only on the basis of specialized knowledge of word formation but using the achievements of cognitive linguistics and linguocultural sciences as well. The word is studied as part of the cultural space of the native speaker, as an inherent component of a person’s activity. Comparative analysis does not only allow highlighting the peculiarities of a particular language but also helps understanding the culturally determined differences in the behaviour of the Russians and the English.
