description In Bolivia, indigenous struggles for self-determination have adopted a specific language and norms with the new Constitution in 2009 through the concept of ‘indigenous native peasant autonomy’. This article analyses the recent norms and the processes underway by which different indigenous peoples intend to access their autonomy. The relations between them and the State constitute a dynamic that we call dialectical. On the one hand, there is the recognition of the right to self-determination; on the other, there is the constant control exercised by the state bureaucracy on the forms and content of such autonomy. Based on interviews done in the Cochabamba, Oruro and La Paz regions, this article presents the critical point of view of some indigenous actors involved in autonomy processes, emphasizing the advances as well as the obstacles and limits of political change.
