Description
Summary:During the Napoleonic Wars, large numbers of wounded soldiers were cared for by the army health services and evacuated across Europe. This article examines the production, transmission and uses of surgical data obtained in this context, by paying attention to the “paper technologies” in use and questioning the place of quantified data. These data have first and foremost a military function for the follow-up of available forces and are, besides, frequently incomplete and heterogeneous, depending on the conditions of their production. Their role in the surgeons’ medical knowledge-building therefore appears to be marginal and complex. Such ambiguity with regard to quantified data makes it possible to qualify the reflections on the militarization of medicine and the medicalization of war.
