Description
Summary:The category of space in the emigre period of I. Brodsky’s creation According to Brodsky, a poet is a traveler, because the destiny gave him an opportunity to move in the space. After years of travelling, the poet has found several places, where he felt at home. One of them became Italy. He visited Italy for the first time in 1973, there was Rome. The poet felt himself comfortable despite not knowing the language. The architecture reminded him his native city. While analyzing the most important Brodsky’s poetic theme – space, we can assume that the main tradition, which he followed, was the tradition of the Baroque. In 1995, Brodsky appealed to the publishing house “Ardis” with a new collection of poems named Landscape with a flood. In the small poem called Island of Procida, which was written in 1994, Brodsky paints a picture of the kingdom of inanimate objects – Landscape with a flood is endowed with a craving for humanization. There is spatial sketch in this lyrical narrative, fixing internal state. A distinctive island of Procida is a carrier of the examples of medieval architecture. For the film The Postman which was released in 1994, its director Michael Radford chose the Bay of Naples. In the film there are the same motives and the same space as in Brodsky’s poem. This fact lets us suggest that after the picture was released, I. Brodsky caught an idea of going to the island of Procida – a poetic space, where there is a particular form of the rest.
